Can I meditate with my eyes closed?
Answered 2026-10-17 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher
You can, but closed eyes are halfway to a dream. Shut them and the mind slides into planning, replaying, dozing. Stare wide open and it chases whatever moves. Zen keeps a middle way: eyes half open, gaze resting on the floor a few feet ahead, soft and unfocused. Nothing to look at, nowhere to hide. In your next sitting, lower your eyes to the floor, let them go blurry, and each time you notice you've drifted, come back to the breath.
This was one stranger’s question. In the app, you sit, say what is actually going on, and the teacher answers you, in a voice, privately. The first dokusan is free.
