Do I have to be a Buddhist to practise zen?

Answered 2026-10-11 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

The cushion has never once asked anyone what they believe. Zen is not a membership; it is an activity, like breathing or walking. Whether you call yourself Buddhist, Christian or nothing at all, the work is the same: stop, sit still, and notice what the mind does when you give it nothing to do. Labels are just more thoughts to watch. Tonight, sit for ten minutes, and each time a name for what you are doing appears, let it go.
