How do I know whether I'm daydreaming or meditating?

Answered 2026-10-16 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

Daydreaming is the ride. Meditation is noticing you got on. Thoughts will come either way; that is not the difference. In a daydream you are gone, rehearsing tomorrow's meeting, and you never know you left. In meditation the same thought arises, and somewhere it is seen. That seeing is the whole practice. Don't judge your sitting by how quiet it was. Count the moments you woke up. Next sitting, each time you catch yourself gone, silently say "here," and return to the breath.
