How do I meditate when I'm in physical pain or ill?

Pain is not in the way of your practice. It is your practice today. You don't need the cushion; lie down if you must. Stop trying to get past the ache to some calmer place behind it. There is no place behind it. Notice how the pain is not one solid thing: it throbs, burns, pulses, shifts. Notice the fear wrapped around it, and set that part down. Next time it flares, breathe out slowly and ask: what exactly is here, right now?
