How do I stop comparing my practice to other people's?

Answered 2026-10-15 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

Comparing is not a flaw in your practice; it is your practice. You are sitting, and the mind leaves to measure someone else's cushion. Notice that it left. That noticing is the whole work. You do not need to stop comparing; you need to catch it, again and again, without scolding. Nobody else can breathe your breath for you. Next time you sit and the thought arrives, silently say "measuring," then return to one full exhalation. It has nothing to compare itself to.
