Is it okay to meditate in a chair?
Answered 2026-10-21 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher
The chair is fine. Slumping in it is the problem. Zen asks for an upright spine and a settled body, not a cushion. Sit toward the front edge so your back holds itself up. Feet flat on the floor, knees about hip height, hands resting in your lap. Let your eyes lower. A kitchen chair, an office chair, a bench at the bus stop: each one works. Tonight, pick a plain chair, scoot forward, and sit for ten minutes without leaning back once.
This was one stranger’s question. In the app, you sit, say what is actually going on, and the teacher answers you, in a voice, privately. The first dokusan is free.
