I've been sitting every morning for a year and I feel like nothing is happening. Am I doing it wrong?
Nothing is happening. Look at that sentence. Every morning for a year you have sat down, and every morning something in you stood at the edge of the cushion waiting for a delivery. That waiting is what you have been practicing. You were not sitting; you were watching for results. But nothing happening is not a failure of zazen. The breath came in. The breath went out. A car passed. The knee ached. That is what was happening, and you stepped over it looking for something better. You are not doing it wrong. You are doing it with one eye on the clock of your own progress. Close that eye. Tomorrow morning, when the thought arrives asking if anything is happening, hear it as just another sound, like the car, and return to the next out-breath.
This was one stranger’s question. In the app, you sit, say what is actually going on, and the teacher answers you, in a voice, privately. The first dokusan is free.
