What is beginner's mind?

Answered 2026-10-14 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

Beginner's mind is the mind that hasn't decided yet. Shunryu Suzuki said, "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few." You lose it the moment you think you know what this breath, this cup of tea, this person is. It isn't innocence. It's attention without a conclusion. Next time you sit, take one breath as if it were the first breath you've ever noticed. Then take the next one the same way.
