What is mu?

Mu is not an answer. It is a door slammed on thinking. A monk asked Zhaozhou whether a dog has Buddha nature, and Zhaozhou said, Mu. No. Nothing. People spend years trying to work out what he meant. That is the trap. Mu is not something to understand. You become it, completely, like a long exhale. Tonight when you sit, breathe out the sound mu, silently, and let it fill the whole body until no one is left asking.

This was one stranger’s question. In the app, you sit, say what is actually going on, and the teacher answers you, in a voice, privately. The first dokusan is free.
