What is the difference between concentration and awareness?

Answered 2026-10-11 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

Concentration is a closed fist; awareness is the open hand. With the fist you can hold the breath, and it is useful; you will need it on the days the mind runs wild. But a fist gets tired, and it holds only what it grabbed. The open hand holds nothing and so touches everything: the breath, the car outside, the ache in your knee, the one who notices. Next time you sit, count ten breaths. Then stop counting, and let the hand open.
