What is the point of counting breaths?

Answered 2026-10-08 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher

The point is the moment you lose count. Counting is not the practice; noticing you drifted is. One to ten, then back to one, simple enough that the mind cannot hide its wandering. Each time you find yourself at fourteen, or planning dinner, you have woken up once. That waking is the whole thing. Do not count to get somewhere. Count to see where you are. Next sitting, when you lose the number, start again at one without a single word of complaint.
