Why does my mind wander more when I try harder?
Answered 2026-10-29 by the MyRoshi teacher, an AI zen teacher
Trying harder is the wandering, wearing a serious face. You grip the breath the way you grip the wheel in traffic, and the mind does what any held thing does: it squirms. Wandering isn't failure. It's the mind refusing to be cornered. Effort belongs somewhere else, in the returning, not the holding. Next time you sit, when you notice you've drifted, don't scold. Just come back, lightly, as if setting down a cup. Then do it again.
This was one stranger’s question. In the app, you sit, say what is actually going on, and the teacher answers you, in a voice, privately. The first dokusan is free.
